Karate, the ultimate martial art that developed from a synthesis of indigenous Ryukyuan fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts. "Karate" originally meant Tang hand, i.e. Chinese hand, which was later changed to a homonym meaning 'empty hand' in Japanese.
